One of the first things CAT 2026 aspirants discover is that there is no official syllabus. The IIMs do not publish a topic list. Instead, the syllabus is inferred from years of past papers. That sounds unsettling, but it actually works in your favour: the patterns are stable enough to prepare from with confidence. Here is a practical, section-wise breakdown, along with how to convert each section's structure into a study plan that respects the 40-minute hard locks.

Section 1: VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension)

VARC is the first of the three sections and, like the others, runs for exactly 40 minutes with a hard lock. Reading Comprehension dominates, typically accounting for around two-thirds of the section. The rest is made up of verbal ability question types.

Expect these components:

  • Reading Comprehension: passages followed by questions on main idea, inference, tone and specific detail.
  • Para-jumbles: reordering scrambled sentences into a coherent paragraph.
  • Para-summary: choosing the option that best captures a paragraph's essence.
  • Odd-sentence-out: identifying the sentence that does not belong.

Because RC carries the bulk of the marks, disciplined daily reading across varied subjects, from economics to philosophy to science, is the single highest-return VARC habit you can build.

How to actually improve at Reading Comprehension

RC is not a topic you finish; it is a skill you sharpen. Aim to read one or two dense articles every day from sources that stretch you, such as long-form journalism, editorials and academic essays. As you read, practise identifying the author's main argument in a single sentence and noticing where the tone shifts. In the exam, the questions that trip aspirants up are rarely factual; they are inference and tone questions, where the correct option is defensible from the passage and the wrong options overstate or subtly distort what the author said. Training yourself to reject an option because it goes one step too far is worth more than any vocabulary list.

Handling the verbal ability question types

Para-jumbles, para-summary and odd-one-out reward a structural way of reading. For para-jumbles, look for the opening sentence that introduces a subject without referring back to anything, then follow the chain of pronouns and connectors. For para-summary, eliminate options that add a new idea or drop the author's central claim. For odd-one-out, find the theme shared by most sentences and remove the one that talks about something adjacent but different. Most of these are TITA-friendly or short, so a reliable method matters more than speed.

Section 2: DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning)

DILR is where preparation strategy matters most, because the section is built around sets rather than standalone questions. A single set can make or break your score, so set selection is a skill in itself.

Common set types include:

  • Tables and caselets with dense data.
  • Bar charts, line charts and pie charts.
  • Linear and circular arrangements.
  • Games and tournaments.
  • Venn diagrams and set theory.

The best approach is to practise recognising, in the first minute, whether a set is worth attempting. DILR rewards the aspirant who quickly abandons a tangled set and commits fully to a solvable one.

A worked example of set selection

Imagine you open the DILR section and skim four sets in the first two minutes. One is a clean table of sales across five cities and three years with straightforward totals to compute. Another is an arrangement with many conditional clues and no obvious starting point. A third is a Venn-diagram set with three overlapping categories and clear numbers. The fourth is a tournament with incomplete results. The disciplined move is to start with the table and the Venn set, because both have a visible entry point, bank those marks, and only then decide whether the arrangement or tournament is worth the remaining minutes. Attempting the tangled arrangement first is the classic trap: you sink fifteen minutes and finish with nothing.

Building DILR range rather than depth

Because you cannot predict which set types appear, breadth beats narrow mastery. Rotate through every format in practice, and after each set, ask what the entry point was and whether you spotted it quickly. Over time you build a mental library of first moves, so that on exam day the recognition happens in seconds rather than minutes.

Section 3: QA (Quantitative Ability)

QA is the final section, and its topic weightage is more predictable than many expect. Based on past papers, the approximate distribution is:

  • Arithmetic: around 40% covering percentages, ratios, time and work, time-speed-distance, profit and loss.
  • Algebra: around 35% including equations, functions, inequalities and progressions.
  • Geometry: around 15%.
  • Number System and Modern Math: roughly 5% each.

The key insight here is that Arithmetic and Algebra together make up close to 70% of Quant. If your fundamentals in these two areas are strong, you have already secured the majority of the section's potential marks. Do not neglect Geometry, but do not let rarer topics consume time that Arithmetic deserves.

Why Arithmetic deserves your first hours

Arithmetic is not only the largest slice of QA; it also underpins much of DILR, where percentage change, ratios and averages appear constantly. Every hour you spend making Arithmetic automatic pays off twice, once in QA and once in data interpretation. A candidate who can compute a percentage change or split a ratio without hesitation moves through both sections faster and with fewer errors.

Do not ignore the smaller slices

Geometry, Number System and Modern Math together still account for roughly a quarter of QA, so treating them as optional is a mistake. The smart approach is selective mastery rather than exhaustive coverage. In Geometry, secure the high-frequency ideas: properties of triangles and circles, basic coordinate geometry and mensuration. In Number System, focus on remainders, factors and divisibility, which recur far more than obscure base conversions. In Modern Math, be comfortable with straightforward permutations, combinations and probability. You are not aiming to solve every exotic problem in these areas; you are aiming to convert the routine ones reliably and recognise quickly when a question is a rabbit hole worth skipping.

A weekly balance for the three sections

Because all three sections carry equal weight in the overall percentile, your weekly plan should touch each one every few days rather than blocking a whole month on a single section. A common failure is spending eight weeks perfecting Quant while VARC and DILR go stale. Rotate: read for RC daily, drill a couple of DILR sets several times a week, and keep a steady Quant practice going. Consistency across sections protects you from the trap of a strong overall score wrecked by one weak section, since some institutes look closely at sectional percentiles too.

How to prioritise when there is no official list

Since the syllabus is inferred, let evidence guide your effort:

  1. Weight your study time toward high-frequency areas, especially RC in VARC and Arithmetic plus Algebra in QA.
  2. Build breadth across DILR set types rather than mastering one narrow format.
  3. Use past-paper patterns, not rumours, to decide what deserves attention.
