CAT Marks vs Percentile: How Your Raw Score Becomes a Percentile

Your CAT raw marks and your percentile are two different things. Here is exactly how one becomes the other, and why the same score can mean different ranks.

One of the most misunderstood parts of CAT is the gap between the marks you score and the percentile you receive. Aspirants often assume a percentile is a percentage of marks, so that 70 marks somehow means the 70th percentile. It does not. The two numbers are built on entirely different logic, and confusing them leads to badly set targets, misread mock results, and needless panic on results day. Understanding the distinction is one of the highest-return things you can do early in your preparation.

How Marks Are Actually Earned

CAT is a two-hour computer-based test split into three sections: VARC, DILR, and QA. Each section runs for 40 minutes and is hard-locked, meaning you cannot return to a section once its time ends. Across roughly 66 to 68 questions, the marking scheme is simple:

  • Plus 3 marks for every correct multiple-choice answer.
  • Minus 1 mark for every wrong multiple-choice answer.
  • Zero penalty for non-MCQ questions, known as TITA, whether right or wrong.

Add these up across all three sections and you get your raw score. This raw number is the starting point, not the final verdict. Because a wrong MCQ costs you a mark while a skipped one costs nothing, two candidates who attempt the same number of questions can end with very different raw scores depending purely on accuracy.

A Worked Example of a Raw Score

Imagine a candidate who, across the whole paper, gets 22 MCQs correct, 6 MCQs wrong, and 4 TITA questions correct. The MCQ credit is 22 times 3, which is 66. The MCQ penalty is 6 times 1, which is minus 6. The TITA questions add 4 times 3, which is 12, with no penalty risk. The raw score is 66 minus 6 plus 12, or 72 marks. Notice how the six wrong MCQs quietly erased six marks: had those been left blank, the same knowledge would have produced 78. This is why reckless attempting is so costly, and why raw score, not attempt count, is what feeds the percentile.

What a Percentile Really Means

A percentile is a rank, not a mark. Specifically, your percentile is the share of test-takers who scored below you. If you are at the 90th percentile, roughly 90 percent of candidates scored lower than you did, and about 10 percent scored higher. This is why a percentile can never simply equal your marks: it is a statement about the crowd, not about the paper.

Two students with identical raw scores in different years, or even different slots, can end up with different percentiles, because the percentile depends on how everyone else performed.

This relative nature is the key insight. Your percentile rises when you outperform the pool, not when you cross some fixed mark. A tough paper where everyone struggles can produce a high percentile from a modest raw score, while an easy paper can demand a much higher raw score for the same percentile because the whole field bunches up near the top.

The Normalisation Step

Because CAT is conducted in multiple slots on the same day, candidates face different question sets of varying difficulty. To keep the competition fair, raw marks are converted to percentiles and normalised across slots. This process adjusts for the fact that one slot's paper might have been harder than another's, so that no group is unfairly advantaged or penalised by the luck of their session.

The practical takeaway is that you should never fixate purely on a raw mark target. The same 75 marks might translate to different percentiles depending on the year, the slot, and overall difficulty. Chasing a fixed mark in a vacuum is like aiming at a target that moves with the wind; what you can control is consistently landing near the top of whatever field turns up.

Notice how few marks separate large percentile jumps at the top. Near the 99 mark, a handful of additional correct answers can move you meaningfully up the rank order, because so many strong candidates cluster together in a narrow band of marks. The same 10-mark improvement is worth far more percentile near the top than it is in the middle of the distribution.

Reading the Table Correctly

Two cautions. First, these are overall figures; each section has its own separate marks-to-percentile relationship, and sectional percentiles behave the same relative way. Second, the ranges are wide on purpose. A year with a harder QA section can lower the marks needed for a given percentile, while an easier year can raise them. Use the table to calibrate ambition, not to predict your exact result to the decimal.

Why Accuracy Beats Volume

Since percentile is relative and every wrong MCQ costs a mark, accuracy quietly does more for your rank than raw aggression does. Consider two candidates who each attempt 30 MCQs. One is 25 correct and 5 wrong: that is 75 minus 5, or 70 marks. The other is 20 correct and 10 wrong: that is 60 minus 10, or 50 marks. Same number of attempts, a 20-mark gap, and at the top of the distribution that gap can mean the difference between the 90s and the high 90s in percentile. The careful test-taker wins the relative race without ever attempting a single extra question.

The Cost of a Single Careless Error

It helps to see the swing a wrong MCQ creates. A correct answer moves you plus 3. A wrong one moves you minus 1. The gap between choosing to attempt a question you get wrong and simply leaving it blank is therefore not one mark but the difference between minus 1 and zero, and the gap between a wrong attempt and a correct one is a full four marks. In a paper where 99 percentile can sit near 85 marks, four marks is not trivial. It can be the space between two whole percentile points at the top of the curve. This is the arithmetic behind the standard advice to attempt only what you can genuinely solve and to treat blind guessing on MCQs as a losing bet.

Why TITA Questions Change Your Calculus

The non-MCQ TITA questions carry no negative marking, which quietly changes how you should treat them. Because a wrong TITA answer costs nothing, there is never a penalty reason to leave one blank once you have committed time to solving it. If you have worked a TITA question down to a numerical answer, enter it; the only risk is a wasted keystroke. This asymmetry means your risk management differs by question type: cautious and selective on MCQs where wrong answers bite, and freely committal on TITA where they do not. Skilled test-takers exploit this difference deliberately rather than treating every question the same way.

  • Treating a percentile as a percentage of marks, and so setting an impossible raw-score goal.
  • Comparing raw scores across different years or mock series as if they were directly equivalent.
  • Attempting recklessly to inflate the attempt count, forgetting that wrong MCQs actively subtract marks.
  • Ignoring sectional percentiles and optimising only for the overall figure.
  • Panicking over a modest raw score on a hard paper, when the field likely struggled just as much.

Since percentile is relative, your goal is not to chase an arbitrary score but to consistently outperform the field. That means accuracy matters as much as attempts, and section balance matters as much as your total.
