Plenty of aspirants clear CAT through disciplined self-study. Coaching can add structure, but the exam rewards clear thinking and honest analysis, both of which you can build alone. CAT 2026 is on Sunday, 29 November 2026: a 2-hour computer-based test with three hard-locked sections, VARC, DILR and QA, of 40 minutes each and roughly 66 to 68 questions overall. The marking is plus 3 for a correct MCQ, minus 1 for a wrong MCQ, and zero for non-MCQ (TITA) questions. What Coaching Really Provides, and How to Replace It
Before deciding you cannot manage alone, it helps to name what a coaching institute actually gives you. Broadly, it offers four things: a syllabus and sequence, study material, mock tests, and accountability. Every one of those has a self-study substitute, as the table below shows. Once you see that, coaching stops looking essential and starts looking like one delivery option among several.

Start With Concepts, Not Shortcuts
Self-study fails when people jump straight to tricks. Build fundamentals first. In QA, focus your energy where the marks are: Arithmetic is about 40 percent and Algebra about 35 percent, so together they are roughly 70 percent of the section. Geometry adds around 15 percent, with Number System and Modern Math around 5 percent each. Master the big blocks before chasing niche topics.
Cover each section deliberately
In VARC, Reading Comprehension is around two-thirds of the section, so daily reading of quality non-fiction is non-negotiable. Add para-jumbles, para-summary, odd-sentence-out and verbal ability practice. In DILR, work through tables, caselets, bar, line and pie charts, linear and circular arrangements, games and tournaments, and Venn diagrams and set theory. The point of covering deliberately is that you never want a set type to surprise you on exam day.
Why concepts beat tricks: a worked example
Suppose the ratio of two numbers is 3 to 5 and their difference is 24. A trick-hunter looks for a formula; a concept-builder reasons that the difference of 2 parts equals 24, so one part is 12, making the numbers 36 and 60. When the exam twists the phrasing, the reasoner adapts and the trick-hunter freezes. Self-study, done right, makes you the reasoner because you are forced to derive rather than memorise.
Build a Weekly Routine
Without a coaching timetable, you must create your own. A workable rhythm is concepts on weekdays and full-length or sectional practice on weekends. Consistency beats intensity: three focused hours daily for six months outperforms occasional marathon sessions. Make Mocks the Core of Your Prep
The single most important self-study principle: analysing a mock matters more than taking it. Anyone can write 30 mocks; few review them properly. Spend more time reviewing than writing. After each mock, ask what you got wrong and why, which questions you should have skipped, and where time leaked. Mock analysis, not mock volume, is the engine of improvement, and it is the one thing self-study students most often neglect.
Keep an error log. Every wrong answer, silly mistake and misjudged question goes in it, along with the reason. Revisit it weekly.
Turn analysis into a checklist
To keep analysis from becoming a vague reread, run each mock through a fixed set of questions. Which questions did I get wrong, and was the cause a concept gap, a calculation slip, or a misread? Which questions did I skip, and was skipping the right call? Which correct answers took too long? Did my section strategy hold for all 40 minutes? Master DILR Set Selection
DILR is where self-study students often lose ground, but it is also where strategy beats raw ability. Set selection, choosing which sets to attempt, matters more than solving speed. Spend your first few minutes scanning all sets and picking the two or three that are solvable, then commit. Learning to walk away from a trap set is a skill you can practise entirely on your own.
A simple scan-and-select drill
Practise this: give yourself three minutes to read every set in a DILR section and rate each one from one to five on how quickly its logic opens up. Then attempt only your top-rated sets. Over dozens of repetitions you train the judgement that separates a 40-minute panic from a calm, high-accuracy section. The goal is not to solve everything; it is to solve the right things fully.
Respect the Marking Scheme
Each correct MCQ earns plus 3, each wrong MCQ costs minus 1, and non-MCQ (TITA) questions carry no negative marking. This shapes strategy: attempt TITA questions freely since there is no penalty, but be selective with MCQs where you are unsure. Accuracy is a strategy, not just a byproduct. A candidate who attempts fewer questions with high accuracy often outscores one who attempts more and bleeds marks to negatives.
The maths of guessing
On a four-option MCQ, a blind guess has a one-in-four chance of plus 3 and a three-in-four chance of minus 1, an expected value below zero. But if you eliminate two options, the odds flip in your favour. So the rule is simple: never guess blindly, but do attempt when you have narrowed the field. On TITA, always enter your best answer, because there is nothing to lose.
Track Sectional Balance
CAT has sectional cutoffs, so a lopsided profile hurts even with a strong total. Self-study gives you the freedom to pour extra hours into your weakest section; use it. Aim for balance across all three. A candidate at the 99th percentile overall but the 70th in one section can still be filtered out by that section's cutoff, so balance is not optional.
Common Mistakes Self-Study Aspirants Make
- Hoarding material. Ten books half-read beat none finished; pick a small trusted set and go deep.
- Skipping analysis. Writing mocks without reviewing them is motion without progress.
- Avoiding the weak section. It is human to practise what you enjoy, but cutoffs punish it.
- Guessing blindly on MCQs. Minus 1 accumulates quietly across a section.
- No fixed routine. Without structure, self-study drifts into occasional bursts.
Set honest targets
A 99-plus percentile is generally needed for the older IIMs, while 90-plus opens newer IIMs and many good non-IIM B-schools. These are reachable through self-study if your analysis is ruthless and your routine is steady. You do not need a coaching brand behind you; you need discipline, good material and honest review. Build the concepts, keep the error log, respect the marking scheme, and let your own analysis be the mentor you never hired.
