It typically presents four to five sets built from tables, caselets, bar, line and pie charts, linear and circular arrangements, games and tournaments, and Venn or set theory logic. The cruel truth every CAT 2025 aspirant relearned is that the section is not a solving test. It is a selection test. You have time to fully crack only two or three sets, so the entire battle is deciding which ones.

Because non-MCQ (TITA) questions carry no negative marking, DILR rewards attempts on questions you have genuinely solved, and punishes you brutally for sinking twenty minutes into a set that never yields. When a set does branch into cases, be systematic. Write each case as a separate line, carry constraints forward, and eliminate branches that violate a rule. Many students fail not because they cannot build cases, but because they build them messily in their head and lose track. On paper, in columns, a hard set becomes manageable. If you cannot get the number of cases down to two or three within a few minutes, abandon it.

Suppose a linear arrangement of five people has the clues that P is not at either end, Q sits immediately left of R, and S is somewhere to the right of P. Place that block first, then slot P into the interior positions it is allowed, then test whether S can sit to P's right in each candidate arrangement. Cross out any arrangement that violates a rule. A workable rhythm for the section is to spend the first three to four minutes scanning and ranking all sets, then roughly ten to twelve minutes each on your two strongest picks, leaving a buffer of eight to ten minutes for a third set or for finishing questions. Do not let a single set exceed twelve minutes; if it does, you have almost certainly misjudged its difficulty and should cut your losses. The buffer matters because good sets sometimes have one genuinely hard final question, and you want spare minutes to attempt it rather than being forced to abandon a set you have already largely cracked. Guard the clock as fiercely as you guard your accuracy, because in a hard-locked section unused understanding is worth nothing once the timer hits zero.

  • Building cases in your head: losing track of branches instead of writing them in clean columns on paper.
  • Misreading units and labels: confusing percentages with absolute values or reading a chart axis wrong, which quietly poisons every answer in the set.
