CAT 2026 is scheduled for Sunday, 29 November 2026. If you are starting around June, six focused months are enough to reach a competitive percentile, provided you follow a structured plan rather than studying randomly. The test is a 2-hour computer-based exam with three sections, VARC, DILR and QA, each running 40 minutes and hard-locked, so sectional balance matters as much as your overall score. With roughly 66 to 68 questions in total, and a marking scheme of plus 3 for a correct MCQ, minus 1 for a wrong MCQ and zero for non-MCQ (TITA) questions, every attempt is a decision. This guide breaks the journey into six phases so you always know what to focus on and when.

Before You Begin: Understand the Terrain

Six months feels long in June and disappears by October. The aspirants who use the time well share one trait: they treat preparation as a sequence of phases with clear goals, not an open-ended grind. Roughly speaking, the first half of your preparation is about coverage and concept-building, and the second half is about mocks, analysis and strategy. If you invert that order, chasing mocks before your concepts are ready, you will burn tests without learning from them.

A realistic weekly budget

Most working aspirants and final-year students can find 20 to 25 hours a week. That is enough. The table below shows a sustainable split that shifts over the six months.

Month 1: Build Your Foundations

Spend the first month getting your concepts right, not chasing speed. In QA, remember that Arithmetic and Algebra together make up roughly 70 percent of the section, so start there: percentages, ratios, averages, time-speed-distance, linear and quadratic equations. For VARC, begin reading longer non-fiction daily, since Reading Comprehension is about two-thirds of the section. In DILR, learn to read tables, caselets and basic charts cleanly before worrying about difficulty.

Set a baseline

Take one diagnostic mock early so you know your starting point. Do not panic at the score; its purpose is direction, not judgement. Note which sections feel alien and which feel merely rusty, and use that to weight your first month.

A worked example to calibrate depth

Concept-building means being able to reason, not just recall a formula. Consider a classic Arithmetic problem: a shopkeeper marks goods 40 percent above cost and offers a 25 percent discount. What is the profit percentage? Take cost as 100. Marked price becomes 140. After a 25 percent discount, selling price is 140 times 0.75, which is 105. Profit is 5 on a cost of 100, so 5 percent. In Month 1 you should be able to build that chain yourself, slowly if needed. Speed comes later; correct reasoning comes first.

Month 2: Widen Your Coverage

Now extend into Geometry and the remaining Arithmetic topics in QA, such as profit and loss, mixtures, and time and work. In VARC, add para-jumbles, para-summary and odd-sentence-out practice alongside your daily reading. In DILR, move into linear and circular arrangements and simple Venn diagram or set theory problems. Keep an error log from day one, writing down every mistake and why it happened. This single habit separates aspirants who improve from those who plateau.

How to keep an error log that works

An error log is not a list of wrong answers; it is a list of reasons. For each mistake, record the question type, the specific cause, and the corrective action. A useful entry format looks like this:

Month 3: Depth and Consistency

Cover Number System and Modern Math in QA, which carry smaller weightage, around 5 percent each, but appear often enough to matter. Push into tougher DILR sets like games and tournaments. By the end of this month you should have seen every major topic type at least once. Start taking a full-length mock roughly every 10 to 14 days, and begin the discipline of reviewing each one thoroughly before writing the next.

Consistency over intensity

Three focused hours daily beats one ten-hour Sunday. The brain consolidates skills through spaced repetition, so a steady rhythm across the week outperforms occasional marathons. If you miss a day, do not try to make it up in a single heroic session; just return to the routine.

Month 4: Shift Toward Mocks

This is the turning point. Move from topic practice to regular full-length mocks, aiming for one or two per week. The rule to internalise: analysing a mock matters more than taking it. Spend more time reviewing than you spent writing. For every mock, study which questions you got wrong, which you skipped correctly, and where you wasted time. Mock analysis, not mock volume, is what raises your percentile.

In DILR, set selection, choosing which sets to attempt, matters more than solving speed. A wrong set choice can sink your whole section.

A structured mock-review routine

After each mock, work through four passes. First, review every question you got wrong and log the reason. Second, review every question you skipped and ask whether skipping was correct. Third, review the questions you got right but slowly, because slow correct answers cost you elsewhere. Fourth, revisit your section strategy: did you allocate the 40 minutes well? Month 5: Refine Strategy and Sectional Balance

By now your weaknesses are visible. Because CAT has sectional cutoffs, a single weak section can block a good overall percentile, so protect your weakest area rather than only feeding your strongest. Practise time allocation within each 40-minute section and rehearse your first-five-minutes routine of scanning and selecting.

Sharpen accuracy

Remember the marking scheme: plus 3 for a correct MCQ, minus 1 for a wrong MCQ, and zero for non-MCQ (TITA) questions. Negative marking means reckless guessing hurts. Attempt with intent. TITA questions carry no penalty, so once you have a defensible answer, enter it. On MCQs where you are down to a genuine two-way split, the expected value can justify a guess; on wild guesses it does not.

Month 6: Peak and Simulate

In the final month, mirror exam conditions. Take mocks on Sunday mornings at the actual test time to build stamina and rhythm. Reduce new-topic learning and focus on revision, error-log review and refining your section strategy. Aim for consistency, not one lucky high score. Your goal is a repeatable process that produces a good score on a slightly-off day, because exam day is often a slightly-off day.

The final two weeks

Do not attempt to learn a new topic in the last fortnight; the risk of shaking your confidence outweighs the marginal gain. Instead, re-read your error log end to end, take two or three final simulations, and sleep properly. Fatigue quietly destroys accuracy in the last 40-minute section, so protect your stamina.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Chasing mock volume over analysis. Thirty un-reviewed mocks teach less than ten well-reviewed ones.
  • Feeding your strong section. It feels productive but sectional cutoffs punish imbalance.
  • Ignoring DILR set selection. Speed cannot rescue a badly chosen set.
  • Reckless MCQ guessing. Minus 1 adds up fast; attempt with intent.
  • Skipping the error log. Without it you repeat the same mistakes for months.
  • Cramming new topics in the last two weeks. Consolidate what you know instead.

Keep Your Targets Realistic

A 99-plus percentile is typically needed for the older IIMs, while a 90-plus percentile opens newer IIMs and many strong non-IIM B-schools. Six disciplined months, honest analysis and steady sectional balance will take you a long way toward those targets. The plan above is not magic; it is structure.
