Not all CAT topics deserve equal time. The exam has three sections, VARC, DILR and QA, each lasting 40 minutes and hard-locked, with roughly 66 to 68 questions in total across the 2-hour computer-based test on 29 November 2026. Knowing where the marks concentrate lets you invest effort where it pays off. This is a section-wise view of what matters most, and just as importantly, how to turn that knowledge into a study plan rather than a trivia list.
Why Weightage Should Drive Your Plan
Every hour you spend is a bet. Spending it on a topic that carries 5 percent of a section when a 40 percent block is still shaky is a losing bet, however interesting the topic feels. Weightage is not a guarantee that a given exam will follow the average exactly, but across mocks and past papers the pattern is stable enough to plan around. The aim is not to ignore small topics; it is to make sure the large ones are solid first.
Quantitative Ability (QA)
QA rewards focus. Its weightage is heavily skewed, so treat these blocks as priorities:
- Arithmetic, around 40 percent: percentages, ratios, averages, time-speed-distance, time and work, profit and loss. This is the single largest area.
- Algebra, around 35 percent: linear and quadratic equations, functions, inequalities, logarithms.
- Geometry, around 15 percent: triangles, circles, coordinate geometry, mensuration.
- Number System and Modern Math, around 5 percent each: smaller but still worth covering once your basics are solid.
The headline takeaway: Arithmetic and Algebra together make up roughly 70 percent of Quant. If your time is limited, these two blocks are where you build your score.

A worked example from the heavy block
Because Arithmetic is the largest area, fluency there pays the most. Take a mixtures problem: 40 litres of a solution is 20 percent acid; how much water must be added to make it 15 percent acid? The acid quantity is fixed at 8 litres. If 8 litres is 15 percent of the new volume, the new volume is 8 divided by 0.15, roughly 53.3 litres, so about 13.3 litres of water is added. Being able to run this reasoning quickly, across dozens of Arithmetic variants, is worth more than any exotic Number System trick.
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
VARC is dominated by one thing: reading. Reading Comprehension makes up about two-thirds of the section, so your comprehension speed and accuracy largely decide your VARC percentile. No amount of grammar drilling compensates for weak reading; the marks simply are not there.
Beyond Reading Comprehension
The remaining third is verbal ability, mostly:
- Para-jumbles
- Para-summary
- Odd-sentence-out
- Other verbal ability questions
Because RC weighs so heavily, daily reading of quality non-fiction is the highest-return habit in VARC preparation. You cannot cram it; you build it over months. Read across subjects, philosophy, economics, science, history, so that no passage topic feels foreign on exam day.
The two-thirds rule in practice
If about two-thirds of VARC is RC, then two-thirds of your VARC practice time should be RC too. A common self-defeating pattern is spending hours on para-jumbles, which feel solvable and satisfying, while neglecting the reading stamina that actually carries the section. Align your practice split with the weightage, not with what feels comfortable.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
DILR has no fixed topic weightage in the way QA does, because it is built from sets rather than isolated questions. The common set types include:
- Tables and caselets
- Bar, line and pie charts
- Linear and circular arrangements
- Games and tournaments
- Venn diagrams and set theory
In DILR, set selection, choosing which sets to attempt, matters more than solving speed. Picking the right two or three sets is the real skill.
Spend the opening minutes scanning every set before committing to any, and be willing to abandon a set that is not opening up. Because DILR is set-based, one wrong choice can cost you a large fraction of the section, which is why judgement outranks raw calculation speed here.
Reading the section, not the questions
The skill that distinguishes strong DILR scorers is that they evaluate the whole section before solving anything. They ask which sets have clean, well-defined constraints and which are open-ended traps. This meta-skill cannot be looked up; it is trained through repeated exposure and honest review of which sets you chose well and which you should have skipped.
How the Marking Scheme Shapes Priorities
Each correct MCQ gives plus 3, each wrong MCQ costs minus 1, and non-MCQ (TITA) questions carry no negative marking. This means you should attempt TITA questions more freely and be selective on uncertain MCQs. Weightage tells you what to study; marking tells you how to attempt. The two work together: study the heavy blocks, then attempt them with accuracy rather than volume.

Common Mistakes in Prioritising Topics
- Over-investing in Number System. It is intriguing but carries only about 5 percent of QA; secure Arithmetic and Algebra first.
- Drilling para-jumbles while neglecting RC. RC is two-thirds of VARC and decides the section.
- Treating DILR like a topic list. It is set-based; selection judgement matters more than memorised types.
- Ignoring the sectional cutoff. A brilliant total cannot rescue a section below its cutoff.

Set your target
A 99-plus percentile is typically needed for the older IIMs, while 90-plus opens newer IIMs and many strong non-IIM B-schools.
