CAT rotates between six older IIMs. The conducting institute's fingerprint shows up everywhere: in question framing, difficulty distribution, and the kinds of traps it loves. Here's the rotation, and the institute likely walking onto stage for 2026.
The most reform-minded IIM in the rotation. Balanced, but balanced isn't the same as flat.
IIM Indore's last CAT (2020) was the biggest pattern overhaul in two decades: 180→120 minutes, 100→76 questions, sectional time locks introduced. They're not afraid to change the test, but the questions themselves trend moderate, with no single section punishing candidates the way Ahmedabad does on QA or Lucknow does across the board.
Expect a fair fight. Don't expect a friendly one.

Why an easy paper is harder than a difficult one.
Same percentile. Different paper. Wildly different marks needed. CAT 2024 (easy) demanded 125 marks for 99.9 percentile. CAT 2023 (hard) demanded just 100. If you're praying for an easy paper, you're praying for higher cut-offs.

The reading section that's mostly reading.
Reading Comprehension owns two-thirds of the section. CAT pulls passages from The Economist, Aeon, The Guardian and The Hindu: abstract, philosophical, often unfamiliar. No direct vocab or grammar in four years.
The set you skip wins more than the set you solve.
The make-or-break section. It's been rated Hard or Very Hard in seven of the last eleven years. Strong attempters do 2.5 sets out of 4. Set selection, knowing what to leave, matters more than solving speed.
Arithmetic is the king. Algebra is the kingmaker.
Quantitative Ability is a test of choosing the right battles. Arithmetic forms the solid baseline of any good score, while Algebra defines the 99th percentile frontier. Geometry and Numbers play supporting roles.
